1. Choose Light Truck Or Special Trailer Tires

The first step is choosing an RV tire category. There are two main options and each is designed for different uses.

First, there are light truck (LT) tires. They are constructed with extra material to make the sidewall sturdier. Their durable design lends itself well to heavier loads and larger vehicles, such as motorhomes.

Then, there are special trailer (ST) tires. They are designed to reduce trailer sway, making them a great fit for towable RVs. They are also stronger than average commuter vehicle tires and built with trailers in mind.

2. Choose Bias Or Radial Tires

Another way RV tires can be categorized is bias versus radial.

Bias RV tires are well-suited for uneven terrain, such as dirt campground trails or rocky paths. They offer a reduced chance of a blowout and tend to have a lifespan of 12,000 miles.

Radial RV tires are ideal for highway travel. They offer perks such as a longer lasting tread, improved traction, better fuel efficiency, and a more smooth driving experience. They tend to last for around 40,000 miles.

3. Consider The RV's Weight

RV tires will inevitably have limits on the amount of weight they can safely transport. Remember that this weight includes the weight of cargo and passengers, not just the RV. A good rule of thumb is to choose RV tires with a higher weight capacity than the RV.

4. Consider The Weather

If you plan on taking your RV through snow, you will want to invest in snow tires. This will make your trip easier and safer.

5. Learn How To Read The Tire Sidewall

Finally, be sure you understand what the various letters and numbers on the RV tire sidewall mean.

The first letters are the tire type - ST for special trailer and LT for light truck. Next, the numbers refer to the tire's width (in millimeters) from sidewall to sidewall. Next, the numbers are the ratio of the tire's cross section height to its width. Next, the letters refer to whether the tires are radial or bias. Finally, the numbers refer to the wheel's diameter.
