Packing well for an RV trip can be something of an art. On the one hand, you need to pack light. On the other, you need to make sure that you haven’t left anything out. This blog provides a guide to striking that perfect balance and getting the essentials covered without overpacking.
It’s easiest to break down your requirements into sections or departments:
Camping Equipment
You’re camping to get away from things! So, there is really no need to bring too many of your household items. They will still be there when you get back. And, you often find that you don’t need half of the things you take. That being said, here’s a shortli of
- Camping chairs,
- A flashlight
- Water bottles (always make sure that they’re filled, and remember to stay hydrated)
- Sunscreen,
- Insect repellent,
- Essential clothing items (remember to check the weather and pack accordingly), and
- Hiking boots, fishing gear, hunting gear or whatever gear is needed for your planned activities.
Cooking
Depending on the equipment that comes with your RV, you can cook decent meals inside the vehicle, unless you’re planning on lighting a cook-fire every day, which is always fun. Bring the following:
- Gas cylinder and/or charcoal, lighters, matches
- Grill or barbecue stand for outside cooking
- Utensils, but stick to one or two well-rounded essentials
- Pots and pans. Again – you only need one or two
- Food. Consider how much you need and also how much you can buy, pick or catch when you get there
- Aluminum foil
- Knives and cutting board
- Appliances. You don’t need most of them, and they take up too much space. Pick one or two that are really necessary.
Bedding
Here’s where you could do with packing a little extra just to be safe. Rather, have more blankets and sheets than you need, than need more than you have.
Hygiene
Don’t forget the basic supplies, such as toothbrushes, towels, soap, toilet paper and laundry detergent.
Tool Kit
Be prepared in case of an emergency. A tool kit that includes a hammer, hatchet, screwdriver kit, cordless drill, even a basic socket set might come in handy. Don’t forget about replacement fuses, hopefully, you won't need them but maybe your camping neighbour might!
